Guide To Buy Back Positions

This section is dedicated to informing the public about how to buy back positions at a school.

Positions can be bought back using Quality Education Investment Act (QEIA) funds and Title I funds. There are some restrictions on exactly how the funds can be used to purchase positions.
  • Step 1: Schools will review several factors to determine the total number of vacant positions. The factors include budgets, class size requirements, newly vacant positions due to RIF notices, and eliminated positions due to norm changes.
  • Step 2: Schools can buy back positions using Quality Education Investment Act (QEIA) funds and Title I funds. There are some restrictions on exactly how the funds can be used to purchase positions. For example, Title I funds must be for Class Size Reduction positions in literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. With these additional funds, schools will be able to purchase more positions. For more information, consult your Program and Budget Handbook.
The section below explains how to fill vacant positions at a school.
  • Step 1: Schools receive lists of employees who are being reassigned and reemployed. The lists are ranked by seniority.
  • Step 2: Schools use the reassignment and reemployment lists to select candidates to interview for an open position. Schools can also attend placement fairs in late May to find candidates to fill their open positions. Schools still have a choice in who they hire to fill vacant positions. Positions can only be filled by candidates who have the appropriate credential.

The section below explains the process for buying coaching positions at a school.

  • Step 1: Since coaches are on a yearly contract and don’t have seniority, schools are given a list of coaches to contact for interviews.
  • Step 2: Schools schedule interviews with desired candidates.
  • Step 3: An offer is extended by the school to the candidate that meets the need of the school.

Updated Information on RIF letters

RIF Letter Rescinded for Some Teachers

From mid-May through early June, math and science teachers should receive letters rescinding the RIF notices received in March. English language arts and social studies teachers that are B2 status should also have their RIF notices rescinded.

Teachers who are not rehired as of June 30, 2009

Teachers who received RIF notices and are not rehired by June 30, 2009 will be added to an LAUSD permanent substitute pool and will be assigned to their current school or family of schools. These teachers will receive the first year teacher pay rate and will maintain their current benefits during this time. These teachers will remain on the reemployment list for 36 months. They will be able to be rehired to their schools if a position is available.
